Grandma-isms
Peanut Butter & Jelly Boats is celebrating her grandma (and her old wive’s tales) today for her Tuesday’s Top Three.
I don’t remember too many old wive’s tales coming from my gram’s mouth, but I will never forget some of her grandma-isms. These are three of my favorites.

My grandma, Viola Belle
- “Don’t make me shout like a fish-wife!” This was usually shouted. From the front porch. SHOUTED LIKE A FISH-WIFE WOULD SHOUT IT. She usually only busted this one out calling my brother for dinner.
- “I love you a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck…” She used to sing this to me when I was little. She knew the whole song, but this is all that I can remember.
- “Your room looks like a whore’s nightmare!” I always wondered how she knew what a whore’s nightmare looked like… She wouldn’t just make that up, right?
What are your top three old wives’ tales or grandma-isms?

Good Morning, Sunshine! What a pleasant surprise to see this picture of my mom on Milk & Honey. One of the things she used to say that I have been thinking of lately is ” Don’t wish your life away.” This usually came while I was bemoaning the fact that the next day wasn’t coming soon enough. The older I get, the more wisdom I see in that “grandma-ism”.
“I love you a bushel and a peck
a bushel and a peck
and a hug around the neck
a hug around the neck
and a barrel and a heap
a barrel and a heap
and I’m talkin’ in my sleep about you!
Yes, I love you a bushel and a peck
Ya bet your pretty neck I do
Doodle oodle oodle
Doodle oodle oodle
Doodle oodle oodle ooo!”
My Grandpa used to sing me the same song….
Love the post!
Welcome to the world of blogging. Oh yes, I remember A Bushel and A Peck playing on the radio. At the age of 3, the song was one of my favorites.
In response to me pouting because of not getting my way, my Grandma Gray used to say, “If you stick out your lip any further, a rooster will peck on it.” Fortunately, I was a city child so there was not much to fear from the pecking roosters.
My grandma used to sing that song to me too! Must be a grandma requirement, like dad’s finishing your dinner in a restaurant or something. Thanks for playing!!
My hubby’s mom sings the bushel & a peck song to my boys. I love that picture. My great-grandmother was named Villa and had sisters named Viola, Valari, and Violet.
I am soooooooo glad to see you’ve started a blog!!
